Things to do & local attractions

Southfork Caravan Park is situated in a peaceful, rural area of Somerset, between the villages of Martock & South Petherton. The area around the park has some beautiful countryside to explore.  We are lucky enough to be in the heart of the Somerset Levels and close to a number of great local attractions.  Whether you are looking for walking, cycling, culture or family friendly activities, South Somerset has a great deal to offer.

For a day out with the family, there are a number of accessible attractions, all within easy reach of the park:

Set deep in the Mendip Hills, Wookey Hole and caves is a great place to visit with the kids, whatever the weather.  As well as the network of caves and caverns (The UKs largest cave systems), and woodland walks there are over 20 other attractions including live shows, indoor and outdoor play, a cave museum, 4 D cinema and new animatronic dinosaurs.   With various events on through the year - check the website to find out what’s on when  www.wookey.co.uk

Another family attraction which is close by is Puxton Park near Weston-Super-Mare.  There are indoor and outdoor play areas, including water pursuits, animal areas and an Adventure area.  The newest attraction to Puxton Park is the exciting new, 20ft high, high ropes course which, as well as giving you a birds’ eye view of the whole park, offers the opportunity to climb, balance and swing your way around the course.  Check the website for more information on opening times and other activities.  www.puxton.co.uk

The Animal Farm Family Theme Park is about an hour’s drive from the campsite, near Brean and offers a fun day out – especially for those with younger children.  With special events throughout the year, have a look at the website for more information and opening times.

The Fleet Air Arm Museum is another must-see attraction if you are visiting Somerset, with its wide range of helicopters and fixed wing aircraft exhibits, including Concorde and the Aircraft Carrier Experience.   With plenty of opportunities for play it is an ideal all weather venue for a day out with the kids. www.fleetairarm.com

A visit to the west Somerset railway is another great location for a day out when in the area.  With 20 miles of railway through the amazing Somerset countryside you can have a nostalgic day riding the steam trains to some lovely locations.  For more information and timetables see - www.west-somerset-railway.co.uk

Gardens and country houses

There are a number or historic houses and gardens to visit in the area.  The National Trust properties, Barrington Court, Montacute House and the gardens at Tintinhull are all within easy reach of the park.  Very close by in Martock is another National Trust property – The Treasurers House which is a fascinating small medieval hall house dating back to 1293!  National Trust Members are eligible for a 10% discount on pitch fees at Southfork.  Keen gardeners may also want to pay a visit to the East Lambrook Manor Gardens.  This English Heritage Grade 1 listed garden is characterised by many winding paths through abundant borders and is renowned as the premier example of the English cottage garden style.

Forde Abbey Historic House and Gardens are also close enough for a visit.  The house has a 900 year history and  the beautiful gardens have been nominated for the Historic Houses Garden of the Year award in 2019.  See the website for more information and upcoming events.  www.fordeabbey.co.uk

The beautiful landscapes of Somerset provide inspiration to many talented artists and craftspeople.  Somerset Crafts are a group of such artists who have set up a craft centre and gallery at the heart of the Somerset levels at the Avalon Marshes.  The Centre displays and sells unique, original hand-crafted items of exceptional quality – all produced by Somerset Crafts members. The artists also run workshops, exhibitions and demonstrations at the centre.  Visit the website to see the makers and plan your visit somersetcrafts.com

The woodworking and arts and craft centre at Yandles is also a mecca for crafty types and hosts events throughout the year.  See the website for details www.yandlesartandcrafts.co.uk
